Sierra | Class of 2019
I met up with Sierra for her senior pictures in our beautiful town of Portland, Michigan...there is no place like home! Both of us agreed that Portland provides many beautiful locations for senior pictures and Sierra chose some of the best ones! Here are a few of my favorite photos from Sierra's session along with more about this beautiful person!
RP: You want to go into the medical field, what drew you to this career choice?
Sierra: My mom is a nurse that always tells us her stories and I find them absolutely fascinating. Additionally, I love to help others and the medical field provides an incredible opportunity to do that.
RP: What has been one of your best or most memorable moments in high school?
Sierra: High School has been filled with some incredible times however I think the top three are taking first in the spring sports carnival for soccer, having a gym class with a large portion of the varsity football team my sophomore year, in which I got to be my competitive self and was viewed as "one of the guys" and lastly, learning who I want to be in life and who my friends really are.
RP: What are some of your words to live by?
Sierra: It's hard to summarize exactly what I live by, but two key things are "treat all people with kindness no matter what" and "well-behaved women rarely make history." In summary, I live by the idea "always be kind to others, but don't be afraid to break the rules." I live by this because sometimes the rules or customs aren't always what is right and there is no point in being cruel to others, it accomplishes nothing, so why not be kind instead?
Thank you, Sierra, for allowing me to capture you during your senior year! I had so much fun!

Morgan | Class of 2019
Morgan's senior pictures happened to take place on one of the most gorgeous Michigan days that we have had in a long time. We woke up bright and early in the morning to get her photos taken before it got too hot with mid-day sun so we both looked like zombies for a minute before we got started! Neither one of us are morning people from what I gathered! Needless to say, we worked through it and got some amazing pictures! Here are a few of my favorites from Morgan's session and a little more about her!
RP: You mention possibly wanting to go into the medical field with the ultimate goal of being a pediatric oncologist. What drew you to this career choice?
Morgan: My second cousin had cancer when he was really young. We don't see each other much, but we still have always been really close. I admire how strong he was as a young boy and overcoming it. I know for sure that I am not as brave as he was and is to this day. Just hearing and seeing what these kids go through inspires me to try and help them get through it.
RP: What was your best moment in volleyball? How about softball?
Morgan: The best moment in volleyball was probably winning a big tournament, the St. Louis one. We were all very proud that we won because our season had a lot of ups and downs, but we managed to fight through this tournament and were awarded in the end! The best moment in softball was the multiple team bonding nights at the pond. I had so much fun getting to know all of my teammates better off the field! Sorry Mom for getting home so late on school nights, but those are memories I will never forget!
RP: What is your greatest success or accomplishment?
Morgan: I'm sure my biggest accomplishment will change as I get older. Right now I would say it is moving from Rockford to Westphalia in 6th grade. It was a pretty big change for me at the time and I had to make all new friends. I would not have it any other way, the move was totally worth it!
Thank you, Morgan, for allowing me to capture you during your senior year!

Brittany | Class of 2019
I was so excited to be able to photograph Brittany in my hometown, Portland. She is from nearby but hardly comes to my beautiful little town so I was thrilled to be able to share some of my favorite locations and secret photo spots! We got a great variety of photos that suited exactly what she was looking for! Here are a few of my favorite images from her session along with a little more about her!
RP: Do you have a hobby? What makes you enjoy it so much?
Brittany: A hobby I have and enjoy is playing basketball. I love doing this so much because I have been playing since I was very little and my teammates are so fun.
RP: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
Brittany: My favorite thing to do in my free time is to go swimming because I love to be on the water or hanging out with my friends and family.
RP: If you were given $1000 what would you do with it?
Brittany: If I was given a $1000 I would honestly save it for the future. Which seems boring but I know college is going to get expensive!
RP: What is your favorite memory from high school so far?
Brittany: My favorite memory from high school so far was when I lost my truck in the parking lot. It sounds really funny but I had forgotten that my vehicle was in the back parking lot from yesterday and my mom had dropped me off at school. I had the almost the whole school staff helping me look. The situation was embarrassing but so funny at the same time.
RP: Where is your favorite vacation spot, why?
Brittany: My favorite spot to vacation was when my family and I went to Gatlinburg Tennessee. There is so much to do in that area, and we got to stay up in a little cottage in the mountains. The view was stunning!
Thank you, Brittany, for allowing me to capture your senior pictures!

Kelsey | Class of 2019
I spent an evening in Grand Ledge, MI getting to know Kelsey and getting some great senior pictures for her! We made a few stops around town which provided for good variety which is always an awesome thing to do for senior pictures when time allows for it. Kelsey was such a trooper with her beautiful smile never wavering the entire evening! Here are a few of my favorites from Kelsey's session and a little more about the great girl in the pictures!
RP: Do you have a secret special ability? Tell us more!
Kelsey: A secret ability that I have is I am pretty good at water sports. At the lake my uncle has a boat that he pulls us wake boarding, knee boarding and tubing. I am the best at tubing out of those and me and my cousins jump each other and rarely fall off.
RP: What is something that you're really good at? How did you get so good?
Kelsey: Something I am really good at is tumbling. I got pretty good at tumbling through all the hours spent pushing myself, setting goals, and practicing often.
RP: What do you hope to experience in your senior year that you just cannot wait for?
Kelsey: Something I cannot wait to experience during my senior year is creating lots of memories through sports and friends.
Thank you, Kelsey, for allowing me to capture you during your senior year!

Jay | Class of 2019
I spent a really hot Michigan evening with Jay getting some awesome senior pictures. He was such a trooper too because by the end of his session we were all looking for the closest water source! He pulled through and we got some great shots though! Here is a little more about Jay and a few of my favorites from his session!
RP: You’ve been playing football since 4th grade! What is your favorite thing about the game?
Jay: I love football because of the intensity, there is no other sport where you get to hit a guy full force every single play.
RP: Who inspires you and why?
Jay: I would say my dad inspires me, I’ve always looked up to him and he understands things in a way I haven’t seen from anyone else, and is cool and collected in every situation.
RP: What is something that makes you laugh every single time?
Jay: I really cannot help myself from laughing when someone gets hurt or does something in a clumsy way
Thank you, Jay, for letting me capture you during your senior year!

Emma | Class of 2019
I spent a day with Emma and her family capturing some gorgeous photos in various places. Some of these places were new territory for me which is exciting because I love discovering new places! Some of the locations were tried and true locations that I have photographed many of times. It did not matter where we went, though, Emma was a natural in front of the camera! Here are a few of my favorites along with a little more about Emma!
RP: You mention that you are scared of butterflies...tell me more about this strange fear and how it came to be!
Emma: When I was little I use to love butterflies so my aunt took me to a butterfly garden. It was all so much fun, but just like me now, when I was young I love to talk. My mouth is constantly open. Half way through our visit at the garden one flew into my mouth and until recently had been one of the most traumatizing events in my life. Haha now I just choose to stay very far away from them😂😂
RP: What are your plans for after High School?
Emma: I plan to not start college right away because I have foreign exchange students from all around the world and I would love to travel all around to try their way of life like they have mine. After that I plan to get my pre-recs and bowl for a college here in Michigan, I have not yet decided on which one yet. After I get my associates I’m thinking about going to a trade school to become a ultrasound technician.
RP: I love the way that you and your parents are so comfortable with one another and able to be silly - what is your favorite funny story with them?
Emma: Trying to find a favorite memory with my family is hard. We cherish every moment together and make the best out of our days we have. We are a very lax, care free family which helps us understand eachother. I couldn’t imagine not being close to my family. It’s something I will alway hold close
Thank you, Emma, for allowing me to capture you during your senior year!

Ellie: I hope to be more outgoing when I meet people and I hope to find new hobbies like I have actually always been interested in photography, not as a career, but just something fun to do on the side while studying cosmetology!
RP: What is the most important lesson that you've learned in life?
Ellie: The most important lesson I have learned is to live your life while you can and without regret because you only have one life like this and you should take advantage of it.

Grace: My favorite makeup look of all time is a shimmery Amber crease with smudged eyeliner only on the outer half of the eye! I think it really makes my eyes pop! One time I tried a silver crease color with a dark green color on the outer half of my eye. I also added some winged eyeliner...what was I thinking??
RP: What is the thing you are most passionate about?
Grace: Something that I am passionate about is making others feel good about themselves. I love to make people smile. I want to be the person who makes everyone feel like someone.

Senior Week | Locations
Part of the fun of planning for your senior pictures is choosing the location of your photos. Michigan provides endless possibilities, so you may have a problem with too many options! But don't worry, your photographer can typically help narrow your choices! Many photographers (including myself) have some favorite locations that they like to photograph, it never hurts to ask for their recommendation, however, if you have access to an awesome spot please share it with your photographer! I personally LOVE a new location, and the most unlikely of locations are often the best ones!
Urban, Country, Woodsy
This is one of the first things that I will ask a client when trying to determine a location. Your photographer needs to know what style is most like you. Where do you enjoy spending time? What type of images are you drawn to? A lot of times the answers to these questions will determine what type of location we should hold your session.
Props
If there are hobbies or sports that you are active in, please tell your photographer! It is important to include these things in your portraits. Sometimes these things can help determine a good location too!
Do you have an animal? Bring them along! We will definitely want to discuss the location based on the fact that you may have a furry friend tagging along and check into park rules beforehand.
Wardrobe
What are you planning to wear for your senior pictures? You will want what you are wearing to match the location that you are in. For example, cowboy boots in an urban area may not look good together. A lot of times, what you wear will help determine the locations that we consider.
Accessibility
Sometimes the best locations are right under your nose. Maybe you have a family member that has an awesome farm with a beautiful old barn. Or someone that you know has a vast field of wildflowers? Try to think outside of the box, because what you have seen before may be the place that helps you achieve the most epic senior portrait!
On the other hand, some of the best locations are inaccessible. This usually occurs due to park rules or trespassing issues. We will do our best to find something comparable and just as gratifying!
As always, don't feel bad if you have to rely on your photographer for suggestions. Many professional photographers have tried and true locations that will provide awesome photos!

Senior Week | Why Reflections Photography?
There are a lot of reasons that I think you should choose Reflections Photography, but it's important to hear it from those who have come before you! Below are what past Reflections Photography Seniors had to say!
“You should choose Reflections Photography to take your senior pictures because Danielle helps make every moment of the session enjoyable, with many laughs and giggles”
“Danielle’s photos are amazing, she will for sure make your session a great time and I promise you that you will laugh more than once with her”
“Danielle was not only someone who is talented behind the camera, she also is an easy going person that made the whole experience fun & light-hearted!”
“I loved my experience with Reflections Photography. Everyone (or at least the girls) think about senior year and all that comes along with this milestone. A huge part is the senior pictures. You want them to look the best they possibly can, and I promise I was not disappointed with Danielle and her business. I loved my experience with her, I always had a great time and I was never disappointed! Do not hesitate when trying to find the perfect photographer and go with Reflections Photography because I promise you will not regret it!”

Senior Week | Hair and Makeup
I have partnered up with my friend, Kristina at Natural Glam by K who is offering some great hair and makeup tips for your photos! Continue reading to see what she recommends so that you can look best for your pictures.
Makeup Tips
The flash of a camera will bounce off of makeup, so it's important that your blending of concealer is done well
Eye Shadow - Use colors that are not too heavy and match your skin tones
Eye Liner - The closer to the lash and tighter the line, the better
False Eyelashes - These really enhance your eyes in portraits, make sure you get a good looking natural set
Lips - Nude is a great choice for most people. This enhances the lip just enough to make it look natural.
Remember that makeup is there to enhance your already gorgeous features. You still want to look like yourself in your pictures, and not too overdone.
Hair Tips
Go a little messy - Hair that is too done will look stiff in photos. When you have it styled perfectly, toss it around just a little to loosen it up, the goal is to get some natural movement
Tame flyaways - To tame these little hairs, keep a toothbrush handy and spray it with hairspray to target your fly-aways without stiffening up your whole style. Most importantly, make sure to tame the fly-aways in and around your face, there is nothing worse than having a small hair in front of your eye in your photos
Flat hair looks really flat in photos - but don't add too much volume because you do not want your hair to look like a helmet!
It’s easy to make your photos look dated quickly with trendy hairstyles. Choose a classic style that is flattering and modern for a portrait that will stand the test of time. Most importantly, choose a style that makes you feel comfortable and look your best. Ultimately, it’s your confidence that will shine through to give you the best possible portrait!
It is never a bad idea to let a professional hair and makeup artist help you for your senior pictures. Kristina offers her services as low as $30 and even comes to your home! You can contact her by calling or texting 517-285-3427.
If you would like to schedule a session with Reflections Photography to include hair and makeup, with Kristina, let us know here so we can get started!
Senior Week | What to Wear
One of the things I hear the most before a session is "what should I wear?" This is easily the biggest question that comes to mind for many seniors preparing to get their photos taken and probably one of the most stressful items to deal with. Before you break the bank and go shopping for a new ensemble, the below pointers should help!
Steer Clear of Fluorescents
These tones tend to place color-cast on faces, necks, and hair. They can be very harsh sometimes.
Wear what you feel good in
If you are not comfortable, it will show! Make sure you have good fitting clothing (not too tight or loose) and that you are con dent in what you wear. Too loose will look frumpy, too tight will just be uncomfortable!
Layers and accessories
Layers give your outfits dimension and versatility. Think about cardigans, sweaters, blazers etc. Adding a belt, necklace, hat, and scarves can also give dimension and add versatility
Matching is out, coordinating is in
Anything goes nowadays! Wearing the same colored shirt, pants, shoes, etc. looks a bit awkward. Coordinating color is what really brings wardrobe together. Choose two to three main colors of wardrobe, and maybe one accent pop of color. Mixing stripes with plaids and tweeds is okay! Expression is important. We want to see your personality through your wardrobe.
Dress for the weather, and be flexible
If you’re from Michigan, you know that it can be 50 and cloudy one day, 75 and sunny 12 hours later. Be prepared to be flexible with wardrobe, in case you have to switch it up last minute. If you have plans for a cute sundress and the weather ends up being 20 degrees colder than you were anticipating, switch it up a bit by adding layers. Tights, boots, scarf, slouchy hat, cardigan. Dress appropriately for the weather that day, even if it doesn’t go with your original plan. If your sweating profusely in a sweater during the shoot, you won’t be happy. On the same token, if your wearing a tank dress and the weather dips too much in the evening making it cold, it’ll reflect in the final images.
Dress for the situation
Just as dressing for weather is important, dressing for the situation is just as important. A fancy black dress and a dress shirt and tie wouldn’t be the most appropriate wardrobe for a forest or grassy setting. More formal wear would be more appropriate for an urban or “big city” feel.
Timeless always has a place
I love when my clients show up to a shoot with the simplest and timeless of outfits. These outfits will always stand the test of time, and will never go out of style.
Shoes are a very important part of wardrobe
If you have the cutest dress for pictures but slap your favorite pair of tennis shoes, it makes the whole look lose cohesiveness. My recommendation for shoes are boots, leather sandals (just say “no” to Old Navy flip flops), Converse All-Stars, Toms, Sperrys, and Mary Janes. Barefoot is always a great option!
Avoid words/letters and large photos on clothing
These words and phrases and photos will go out of style. Having these things in a prominent place on your clothing will result in less timeless photos.
Hairpiece tips
I always recommend keeping hair accessories simple. When they are too big it distracts from your face.
Personality and Pictures
The most important part of putting together your wardrobe is allowing personality to come through in what you’re wearing. If you have a favorite pair of boots, wear them! If you love to wear hats and sunglasses, bring them! Whatever makes you your own individual, awesome self, let’s focus on those things.
Number of Outfits
I always recommend 2-3 outfits for senior sessions. This number is the sweet spot between too few and too many! You definitely do not want to get overwhelmed with choices while in the middle of your session! With those few outfits you do bring, remember to accessorize and have fun!
